Identify Conventions for Page Numbersįirst, you need to check what the conventions are for the page numbers you have to insert. See the post below for how to add custom page numbering to your MS Word documents. It's so unintuitive to do this that sometimes departments provide templates with the pagination already set, or just tell students not to worry about it at all. If you've ever tried to do this in a word-processing program like MS Word, you may have found it frustrating to get right. But many professional documents require pagination that goes beyond simply adding page numbers to the top or bottom of every page. For instance, your business plan may need to have a cover page without a number, introductory front matter that has Roman numerals, and a body that has Arabic numerals. Page numbers can be useful to readers, especially if the text is long.
